Cosmetology Program
The comprehensive GHS Cosmetology program is for students interested in a career in cosmetology that includes hair design, barbering, esthetics and nail technology. This exciting and creative program offers students the opportunity to engage in the art and science of cosmetology with no cost to them, while satisfying high school graduation requirements.Gateways Cosmetology Academy uses a competency based format, which provides the same curricular content that is taught in post-secondary clock hour programs. Students attend theory and lab classes, eventually using the knowledge they have gained to perform services in hair design, barbering, esthetics and nail technology on mannequins, models and clients.
Students will engage in cosmetology courses alongside their core classes to satisfy graduation requirements to earn their high school diploma. All students will study the foundations of hair design and natural hair care, which are the two major fields of practice that any well-rounded or specialized cosmetologist will need to know.
With a foundation of industry-standard skills, rigorous and relevant science and language arts training and the ability to obtain licensure upon high school graduation. Students that complete our learning pathway and complete the competency requirements for their field of practice, will have the opportunity to take the Oregon Board of Cosmetology Licensure Exam and have a jumpstart in their chosen field of practice.
What You Get From Our Program
Students in the 2-year Gateways Cosmetology Academy program learn contextualized science and language arts along with the Foundations of Cosmetology. Students receive professional coaching, resources to explore cosmetology career options, and work-based learning opportunities at local Salons, Spas, and Barber Shops. Coupled with expert presentations, visits to local Salons, Spas, and Barber Shops, and technical practices within a state-of-the-art salon lab throughout this program. In addition, our students have the opportunity to build a network of professional relationships across the region that will be anxious to employ our graduates who pass the Oregon Board Exam.

Learning Outcomes

- Scissors, clipper over comb, shaving, freehand, and blade attachment techniques.
- Understand and identify skin, scalp, nail diseases and disorders.
- Skin and nail care along with head, hand and facial massage.
- Learn about the latest industry technology and techniques in haircolor, perming, straightening and styling.
- Acquire transferable hours toward earning your Oregon State Licensure if the program is not completed.
Possibilities After Graduation
Classes in the pathway include: Entrepreneurship, Advanced Hair, Barbering, Skin Care and Nail Care classes, and Customer Relations.
Career possibilities include: Hairstylist, Barber, Nail Technician, Esthetician, and Social Media Influencer.
Annual Salary Range: $36,000 - $120,000
